Biography

William Smith was born on July 31, 1800, in Cavendish, VT. He entered Dartmouth College in 1822, but left in 1824 for health reasons. After he left Dartmouth he was involved first with the manufacture of potato starch and then wool, manufacturing it in Proctorsville, VT. He retired prior to the Civil War. Smith was active in his community where he was a selectman, a representative of his town in the legislature and a justice of the Peace. He was also a director of the National Bank, a trustee of the Public Library and one of the founders of the Universalist Church in Cavendish, VT. Smith died on April 13, 1891 in Proctor, VT.
