Introduction to the Collection

William Tucker's commonplace book contains thoughts on religion and morality as well as statistics. Tucker's diary records daily observations of the weather, his devotion and gratitude to God and accounts of his business dealings.

Biography

William Tucker was born in 1783. He entered Amherst in 1833, but left in order to go into business with his father and cousin. Known by the name "Squire Tucker" he was a pioneer in manufacturing and represented the town of Norwich, Connecticut in the state legislature. Tucker was the grandfather of William Jewett Tucker. He died in 1839, at the age of fifty-seven.
