Ralph Izard Middleton (1890-1914), educator. Dartmouth College Class of 1860. The collection contains a manuscript of Middleton's memoir detailing his experiences as a Confederate soldier during the US Civil War.

Introduction to the Collection

The collection contains a manuscript of a memoir written by Ralph Izard Middleton, entitled "Lessons of the War: Its Origin and Import as Viewed by a Confederate Private."

Biography

Ralph Izard Middleton was born on January 16, 1840, in Charleston, South Carolina. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1860. At the opening of the Civil War he entered the North Santee Mounted Rifleman, and later joined the Marion Artillery in which he remained until the end of the war. After the war he returned to Charleston and resumed his life as a rice planter. He was also assistant treasurer of the Charleston Gas Company for several years. In addition, Middleton was connected with the public schools of Charleston, as vice principal of the Bennett School and Crafts School. He later taught school in Summerville, SC. Middleton died in 1914.
