Introduction to the Collection

The papers of Benjamin West contain a journal he kept while a student at Dartmouth College, as well as pen and ink drawings by West. In the journal, started when he was a seventeen year old freshman, West chronicles his daily activities and those of his family. The sketches depict scenes, some with quotes, from books by Charles Dickens, including Oliver Twist and The Pickwick Papers.

Biography

Benjamin West was born on May 15, 1812, in Boston, Massachusetts. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1833, and from Harvard Law School in 1836. After graduation he went into practice in Rochester, Illinois. In 1840, West went into wool manufacturing and in 1846, he represented Sangamon County in the Illinois legislature until his death. West died on June 23, 1847 in Rochester, Illinois.
