Introduction to the Collection

The papers of Charles F. Weller contain personal and professional correspondence, writings, photographs, printed material and records related to his personal life and that of his wife Eugenia Winston Weller as well as his founding and leadership (1941-1952) of the World Fellowship of Faiths Center in New Hampshire. Of note are the early records and correspondence regarding the Center whose mission of social consciousness, inclusiveness and world peace were a reflection of Weller's core world view. These views are also reflected in the hundreds of poems and sermons (verses) he wrote, often on a daily basis, which are also included in this collection. Correspondents include Lola Maverick Lloyd, Margaret Sanger, Sakuntula Rao Sashti, and Willard Uphaus. A disbound scrapbook with annotated photographs, correspondence and memorabilia related to the World Fellowship of Faiths, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Playground and Recreation Association, the League of Neighbors and the Boy Scouts of America is also included.

Biography

Charles Frederick Weller was born on August 19, 1870, in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from the University of Michigan with a BS in 1894. One of his first positions was as director of the Chicago Bureau of Charities. Weller and his wife Eugenia were leaders in the recreation movement in Washington, D.C., establishing the first playground there. They also established a variety of organized charities, including the Englewood and West Side districts of the Chicago Bureau of Charities. In addition, Weller was director of the National Council of Boy Scouts and in 1941, founded the World Fellowship Center with his wife in Albany, NH. In 1952, he handed over the reigns of the Center to Willard Uphaus. He died on May 18, 1957.
