Introduction to the Collection

The papers of Artemas Packard contain personal and professional correspondence, teaching materials, administrative records, photographs, manuscripts and typescripts, as well as a scrapbook. The collection documents Packard's life as a Lieutenant in World War I, his teaching and professional life at Dartmouth College, his involvement with the Museum of Modern Art and the Delphian Society, a women's educational group. Correspondents include Lewis Mumford, Buckminster Fuller, Benton Mackaye, Thomas J. Watson, Adelbert Ames; Otis E. Randall, Nelson Rockefeller and Ernest M. Hopkins. Of note, are extensive personal letters with Lewis Mumford, materials related to Packard's efforts in bringing muralist Jose Clemente Orozco to campus and his role in authoring a major report for the Museum of Modern Art.
