Introduction to the Collection

The papers of Marjory Lord Packard contain family correspondence, class notes, ephemera, receipts, photographs, genealogical information of the Lord family and research for her essay, "Early Houses: Outside the Village." The material documents her education and early family life. Of note are her detailed letters home, while on a trip to Europe from 1927 to 1928. Correspondents include her parents Annette B. Lord and George Dana Lord, as well as George Dockstader. The collection also contains some correspondence between her parents and some of George Dana Lord.

Biography

Marjory Lord Packard was born in 1899 in Hanover, NH. She was the daughter of George Dana Lord, who taught Greek and classical archeology at Dartmouth College from 1877 to 1933. Mrs. Packard graduated from Smith College and was prominent in church, school and community affairs of Hanover, and for some years was librarian in Baker's Library Tower Room. On June 26, 1926, she married Artemas Packard. In 1961, Mrs. Packard wrote an essay entitled "Early Houses: Outside the Village," for the book "Hanover - a bicentennial book, 1761-1961." She died with her husband in an automobile accident in 1961.
