Abstract:

Ernest Martin Hopkins (1877-1964), president of Dartmouth College (1916-1945) and graduate of the Class of 1901. The collection contains professional correspondence, manuscripts, articles, diaries, appointment books, clippings, reports, financial documents, ephemera and scrapbook pages. The collection chronicles Hopkins professional life outside of Dartmouth with personal financial materials as well as family correspondence included.

Use & Access

The materials represented in this guide may be accessed through the Rauner Special Collections Library at Dartmouth College. Rauner Library is located in Webster Hall. The materials must be used on-site and may not leave Rauner Library.

Rauner Special Collections Library is open to the public and in most cases no appointment is necessary. The exception is in the case of materials stored off site for which there may be a delay of up to 48 hours in retrieval. Introduction to the Collection

The papers of Ernest Martin Hopkins contain professional correspondence; manuscripts, including the manuscript for his book “This Is Our Purpose”, articles, appointment books, journals, clippings, reports, financial documents, ephemera and scrapbook pages. The material documents his professional life before, after and outside his tenure as president of Dartmouth College (1916-1945). Of note is the correspondence related to his involvement with the War Department during World War I, the National Life Insurance Company, the Guam and American Samoa Committee and the Boston and Maine Railroad Company. Correspondents include John D. Rockefeller Jr., John D. Rockefeller III, Nelson Rockefeller, Deane C. Davis, Harvey P. Hood and John Sloan Dickey. Personal material including real estate and stock holdings, tax returns and some family correspondence can also be found in the collection.

Biography

Ernest Martin Hopkins was born on November 6, 1877 in Dunbarton, NH. He attended Worcester Academy before he matriculated at Dartmouth College with the class of 1901. After graduation, he served as private secretary to President William Jewett Tucker from 1901-1905 and as Secretary of the College from 1905-1910. Following six years in the business world working for Wm. Filene's Sons, the New England Telephone and Telegraph Company, Western Electric and Curtis Publishing, he was selected as Dartmouth's eleventh president in 1916 and served for 29 years until his retirement in 1945. After Dartmouth, he joined the National Life Insurance Company of Montpelier, VT, from 1948 to 1950, becoming chairman of the board in 1950. In 1962, Dartmouth dedicated the newly built Hopkins Center to him. Hopkins died on August 13, 1964.

Contains professional correspondence arranged in three sections to maintain original order. The first section covers primarily the years between 1910 and 1916. The second, the years from 1918 to the 1930s and the third the years from the 1940s until Hopkins' death in 1964. Some personal correspondence as well as reports, ephemera, an employee record and a list of his insurance policies are also included.
