Abstract:

Nelson Pierce Brown (1878-1946). Dartmouth Class of 1899, and judge on the Massachusetts Supreme Court. The papers document Brown's Massachusetts Supreme Court career, his college years at Dartmouth, and his relationship with Dartmouth throughout his lifetime. Includes a 24-volume set of trial notes, as well as personal correspondence, bound orations, a college photographic album, newspaper clippings and obituaries, diaries, and a manuscript of a legal glossary Brown authored.

Introduction to the Collection

The Papers of Nelson P. Brown consists of trial notes, personal correspondence, photographs, a photographic album, newspaper clippings, diaries, and a manuscript of a legal glossary. While the collection spans the majority of Brown's life, the papers primarily document his time as a Massachusetts Supreme Court judge, his oratory career, his college years, and his relationship with Dartmouth College throughout his lifetime. Items of particular interest is a 24-volume set of trial notes authored by Brown, which contains personal records of appeals and jurors, trial related correspondence, sketches of members in the courtroom and newspaper clippings about trials. Other items include personal correspondence with Dartmouth President Ernest Hopkins, self-bound speech transcriptions, a copy of his unsigned will, a telegram announcing his death, and sections of a manuscript for an unpublished legal glossary. Personal items such as diaries, expenses, correspondence with his wife and loose photographs of a trip are also included.

Biography

Nelson Pierce Brown was born in Cambridge, MA on May 13, 1878. He graduated from Everett High School in 1895 and attended Dartmouth College, where he won the Kappa Kappa Kappa prize for oration from 1895-1899, the Rollins prize for oration in 1898, was named president of the Dartmouth Debate Union in 1899, and selected Class Orator for 1899. Brown graduated from Dartmouth in 1899 and taught at Dartmouth from 1901-02. In 1903 Brown married Margaret Tucker, daughter of Dartmouth president William Jewett Tucker and graduated Harvard Law. Appointed Middlesex Co. District Attorney in 1912 and Assistant to attorney general Henry C. Attwill in 1915 Brown was appointed to the Massachusetts Supreme Court in 1918 where he served for 29 years. Brown died in Everett, MA on April 9, 1946 and was buried in Hanover, NH.

Series 1, Correspondence, 1903-1944

Letters written to Brown and letters written by his wife, Margret to others. Primarily concerns Dartmouth President William Jewett Tucker's inclusion in the Cyclopedia of American Biography, the merging of the Dartmouth Club of Boston and the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Boston. Additionally, a letter from Antonio Teregno, indicted for the murder of Raffaele Cammorda in 1918, is included. Correspondents include Dartmouth President Earnest M. Hopkins and Lucius E. Varney.
