Ernest Francis Brown, editor, writer. Born December, 31, 1903. Dartmouth College class of 1925. Contains correspondence, manuscript materials, memoirs, articles, reports, meeting minutes, memos, book reviews, photographs, essays and clippings related to his book, "Raymond of the Times", his editorial career with Current History magazine, Time magazine and the New York Times Book Review. Also includes material related to his undergraduate study, teaching and alumni involvement at Dartmouth College. Died 1995. Memoirs are restricted.

Contains correspondence, manuscript materials, typescripts, memoirs, photocopies and originals of articles, reports, meeting minutes, financial and administrative papers, essays, contracts, memos, book reviews, photographs, and clippings related to his book, “Raymond and the Times,” his public service, and editorial career with Current History, Time magazine, and the New York Times Book Review. Materials also relate to Time Inc. Latin America and to Brown's undergraduate study, teaching and alumni involvement at Dartmouth College. Of note is correspondence outlining the background of the Daniel Webster papers project at Dartmouth College and correspondence with major literary figures of the nineteen fifties and sixties due to Brown's role as Editor of the New York Times Book Review. Memoirs are restricted.

Biography

Ernest Francis Brown was born in Amherst, MA, on December 31, 1903. He received his B.S degree from Dartmouth College in 1925. After Dartmouth, Brown attended Columbia University, earning his A. M degree in 1927 and his Ph. D in history in 1931. While working on his dissertation he served on the Dartmouth faculty from 1926-1929. 
 
 Brown was associate editor of Current History magazine and later senior editor of Time magazine before becoming editor of the New York Times Book Review from 1949-1971. In addition to his editorial career, Brown wrote several books. Most notably his biographies of Joseph Hawley, Edmund Niles Huyck, and Henry J. Raymond. Brown was awarded an honorary degree from Dartmouth College in 1952. He died on November 17, 1995 in Brunswick, Me.
