Introduction to the Collection

The papers of Philip Booth contain correspondence with family including his father Edmund H. Booth, poets and writers, including Ted Hughes, Sylvia Plath, W.D. Snodgrass, David Bradley, Robert Lowell, May Sarton, E.B. White, William Carlos Williams, George Elliot, Robert Lowell, Ben Shahn, Galway Kinnell, W.S. Merwin, Eugene McCarthy; Gary Snyder, Anne Sexton, Theodore Roethke, Kenneth Rexroth, Richard Eberhart, Adrienne Rich, Robert Bly, Donald Hall, James Merrill, Hayden Carruth, and many others. Correspondence with publishers, friends from Castine, Maine, as well as fans and former students is also included. In addition to the correspondence the collection contains manuscripts, typescripts and galley proofs of poems and prose by Booth, newspaper clippings, photographs and negatives, audio cassette tapes with readings and interviews, as well as books with annotations by Booth. Some material related to Booth's father Edmund H. Booth and his grandfather Frank W. Booth is also included.
