The Jonathan Freeman papers contain correspondence to and from Freeman, 11 typed transcriptions of Freeman's correspondence, account entries, leases, legal summons and pleas. The papers document Freeman's family life and time as the Financier and Trustee for Dartmouth College. Additional materials address a landholding legal dispute with Ebenezer Woodward.
Jonathan Freeman (1745-1808) was a Trustee of Dartmouth College from 1793-1808 as well as Financier of Dartmouth College from 1789-1808. In 1797 Freeman was elected to U.S. Congress where he served until 1801. As an original Hanover settler and prominent landholder Freeman was responsible for the first survey of the village as well as its design with the Green at the center.
Contains handwritten correspondence from and to Jonathan Freeman concerning family and domestic life as well as correspondence pertaining to Freeman's association with Dartmouth College as financier. Several typed transcriptions of personal correspondence accompany.
