Abstract:

Frank Daniel Gilroy (1925-2015), playwright and author. Dartmouth College Class of 1950. The papers contain typescripts of his plays, screenplays, television series, novels, novellas and stories. Other materials include correspondence, journals, financial and legal documents, contracts, photographs, slides, audio recordings, news clippings, playbills, and publicity ephemera. The collection chronicles Gilroy's life as writer, director and producer.

Introduction to the Collection

The papers of Frank Gilroy contain typescripts of his plays, screenplays, television series, novels, novellas and stories. Other materials include correspondence, journals, financial and legal documents, contracts, photographs, slides, audio recordings, news clippings and publicity ephemera. The collection chronicles Gilroy's professional life as a writer, director and producer. Of note is correspondence and legal documents related to Gilroy's law suit against ABC Television and Four Star Entertainment over the use of one of his characters in "Burke's Law." Additionally, the papers contain drafts and production files for many of his publications and movies, including "The Subject was Roses,” "The Luckiest Man in the World," "The Gig," "Money Plays," "Desperate Characters," and "Once in Paris.” Gilroy’s journals are restricted from public access.

Biography

Frank Daniel Gilroy was born October 13, 1925, in New York City. After graduation from DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx he enlisted in the Army. Gilroy later attended Dartmouth College graduating in 1950 and Yale School of Drama with a grant received from Dartmouth. Gilroy returned to New York and began writing for television programs such as "Playhouse 90," "Westinghouse Studio One" and "Kraft Television Theatre." In 1962, his play "Who'll Save the Plowboy" was performed at the Phoenix Theatre in New York and won him an Obie award. The play "The Subject was Roses" followed in 1964, for which he won a Tony Award for Best Play and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1965. Gilroy's other works include screenplays for "Desperate Characters," "The Gallant House," and "The Only Game in Town." He has also written fiction including the novel "From Noon Till Three". Gilroy died on September 12, 2015.
