Introduction to the Collection

The papers of Jon Appleton contain correspondence and other material including brochures, flyers, programs, clippings, manuals and notes related to the Electronic Music Department at Dartmouth College, the Dartmouth International Electronic Music Competition, the Dartmouth Foreign Study Program in Tonga, the 1992 Vermont Senate race, the development and use of the Synclavier, the New England Digital Corporation and the Bregman Electronic Music Studio, as well as newspaper and magazine articles and clippings, typescripts, including an early draft of his autobiography "The Syntonic Menagerie - A Life in Many Parts," publicity materials, music reviews, programs, photographs and scrapbooks of Appleton's adolescent political interests. The collection also includes 5 and 12 inch reel-to reel audio recordings, compact discs of lectures and interviews, a VHS taped lecture and computer floppy disks with programs for the Synclavier. Sheet music of musical scores composed by Appleton are also included. Much of the material documents Appleton's time as a professor of music at Dartmouth, and his involvement and work in the field of electronic music.
