Abstract:

Wesley Abel Hunt (1850-1939), railroad station agent and postmaster. The collection contains diaries spanning much of Hunt's life, including detailed descriptions of life in Charlestown, NH. Topics include farming, working on the railroad, church and school life. The collection also includes typescript transcriptions of the diaries and the book "Roots and Branches of the Hunt-Fifield-Bailey Family and the Time in which They Lived, 1630-1980," by Emma A. Hunt, Erling Messer Hunt and Virginia Hunt Moulton.

Introduction to the Collection

The Wesley A. Hunt collection contains diaries chronicling his life in Charlestown, NH, including farming, working on the railroad, church and school life. Of particular interest is the period when Hunt was homesteading in the Dakota Territory in 1883. The collection also contains typescript transcripts of the diaries by Emma A. Hunt, as well as the book "Roots and Branches of the Hunt-Fifield-Bailey Family and the Time in which They Lived, 1630-1980," by Emma A. Hunt, Erling Messer Hunt and Virginia Hunt Moulton.

Biography

Wesley Abel Hunt was born on February 26, 1850 in Charlestown, NH. He attended several nearby schools, including Stevens High School in Claremont, NH. Hunt worked primarily on his family's farm but also worked for other farmers, a saw mill, as sexton of his church and as a section hand of the railroad track. In 1872, he became a station agent and postmaster in North Charlestown. In 1883, Hunt set out to homestead in North Dakota. After his return he settled back into life in Charlestown. He retired from his positions as station agent and postmaster in 1915. He died in October of 1939.
