Introduction

The Dartmouth College Library received the Papers of Reuel Denney as a gift from Mr. Denney in 1994. A Class of 1932 alumnus, Reuel Denney was a teacher, poet, journalist, and co-author with David Riesman and Nathan Glazer of The Lonely Crowd; now retired, he remains active in writing poetry and fiction. Although a small collection of only 5 boxes, the Denney papers are rich in interest in several areas, and are an important addition to the Library's holdings.

Born April 13, 1913 in New York City, Reuel Denney graduated from Dartmouth College in 1932. A protege of English professor Sidney Cox, he wrote for The Arts while at the College. Denney began his teaching career in 1935 at the Technical High School in Buffalo, New York, writing in his spare time. He married Ruth Norton in 1938. The following year he received the Yale Series of Younger Poets Award, and his first book, The Connecticut River and Other Poems, was published. Denney received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1941. After brief stints at Time and Fortune magazines, he accepted, in 1948, a position as Assistant Professor of Humanities at the University of Chicago. There he reestablished links with a former acquaintance, David Riesman, and The Lonely Crowd, published in 1950, was an immediate success. Promoted to Professor of Social Sciences in 1953, Denney remained at the University of Chicago until 1962, when after a year as Visiting Professor at the University of Hawaii, he accepted a Professorship there in American Studies and English. While still at Chicago, he published two more books, The Astonished Muse (1957) and In Praise of Adam (1961). He also received several prestigious prizes for his writing and teaching.

Reuel Denney continued his distinguished career at the University of Hawaii, publishing Conrad Aiken for the University of Minnesota Pamphlets on American Writers Series in 1965, and being named a Commissioner of the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts in 1966. He received the National Institute of Arts and Letters prize in 1968. Denney also held poetry readings at Honolulu's East-West Center, and the Academy of Arts, and participated in other cultural events. He retired from the University of Hawaii in 1977, continuing as Senior Visiting Researcher at the East-West Center until 1982. He also continued to publish, winning the Quarterly Review of Literature prize in 1984 for his long poem, The Portfolio of Benjamin Latrobe. In 1988 Denney was honored with the 1987 Hawai'i Award for Literature.

The Reuel Denney Papers occupy 5 boxes, or approximately 7.0 linear feet of shelf space, and are composed of articles, clippings, correspondence, papers, photographs, pamphlets, reports, poems, book manuscripts, speeches, programs and other items. The David Riesman materials found in several parts of the collection (Book Mss.: The Lonely Crowd, Colleges and Universities: University of Chicago, and Special Correspondents) are of particular interest. Riesman, a distinguished social scientist and writer, was the principal author of The Lonely Crowd and almost a cult figure in the 1950's and '60's. The articles and papers in the collection, and especially his correspondence, reflect the breadth of his interests in the field of social science, as well as his warmth of personality.

Another area of exceptional interest, especially to Dartmouth historians, is to be found in Colleges and Universities: Dartmouth College. Consisting mostly of correspondence with other '32's, including W.H. Ferry, Carlos Baker, and John B. Keller, there are several folders of letters from teachers, including Denney's mentor, Sidney Cox, and Lawrence Leighton, an instructor in the Classics Dept. Sidney Cox has become a rather legendary figure at Dartmouth, while Leighton has been forgotten. His tenure was brief, 1928-1934, after which he took a job at Harvard. His letters to Denney, in which he speaks openly of his homosexuality, offer researchers a glimpse of a hitherto unknown element in the student/teacher relationship at the College.

No restrictions have been placed on the use of any of the materials in the Reuel Denney Papers, and photocopying may be requested at the Reading Room desk. Further information concerning Reuel Denney may be found in Special Collections in Webster Hall.
