Introduction

Frederick D. Forsch, a member of the Dartmouth Class of 1937, had a lifelong interest in and admiration of Winston Churchill. After graduating from Dartmouth College, Mr. Forsch worked in banks in New York City for his entire career. His interest in Churchill grew and he began to collect Churchilliana. As a result, he had one of the finest collections of Churchill material in private hands when he presented it to Dartmouth in 1992. In 1998, additional resources from the estate were presented to Dartmouth. Chief among these was a rich series of original letters that are found in Box IV of the collection.

The collection is in two parts. The printed materials, both monographs and serials, have been cataloged separately and can be found in the Rare Book Collection. The manuscripts, photographs, and art-work are to be found in this collection. The collection includes a series of manuscripts of Churchill, from early newspaper columns to notes for speeches, to one-time secret documents. A second large section of the collection is the correspondence that spans his entire career from 1886 to 1960. Chief among the correspondence is a body of letters exchanged between Churchill and Admiral Sir Roger Keyes (1872-1945) concerning the German naval buildup in the 1920's and 1930's.

A third group of materials are signed photographs. Fourth are a series of seventeen cartoons and drawings of Churchill, many be well-known artists, executed for newspapers and journals during Churchill's political career.

The collection is housed in four boxes (3 linear feet). There are no restrictions on use.
