Abstract:

John Foster (1852-1914), attorney. Dartmouth College Class of 1876. The collection contains legal and personal correspondence, primarily relating to Foster's legal practice. Accounts, bills, depositions, and other legal documents as well as several speeches delivered in Manchester, NH are also included, as is a small quantity of correspondence with fellow Dartmouth College classmates.

The materials represented in this guide may be accessed through the Rauner Special Collections Library at Dartmouth College. Rauner Library is located in Webster Hall. The materials must be used on-site and may not leave Rauner Library.

Introduction to the Collection

The papers of John Foster consist primarily of legal papers including correspondence, both professional and personal, court papers, depositions, accounts as well as speeches Foster gave in Manchester, NH. A small quantity of correspondence with classmates from Dartmouth College, Class of 1876 is also included.

Biography

John Foster was born in Warner, New Hampshire in 1852. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1876. In 1878, Foster was admitted o the New Hampshire Bar and opened a law practice in Manchester, NH. In 1879, he was elected to the state legislature where he served one term. In 1866, Foster's health began to fail and in 1890, he retired from his law practice. He died in 1914.
