Adjunct Descriptive Data

George Macy founded the Limited Editions Club in 1929 to produce elegant editions of classic as well as modern literature. From the first volume published in 1929 to 1985, nearly 550 editions and special publications were created for members of the club. Each edition was designed, edited, and illustrated to produce a quality edition.

The papers in this collection are primarily correspondence between Macy and book designers, printers, and illustrators. At the same time, there is a small quantity of correspondence with editors and authors of introductions. Also included, in a few cases, are designs and drawings of several of the illustrators. The collection provides a clear view of the work that went into producing each volume.

The collection is organized as it was received. The materials are in the order of publication for the most part with a small series of letters and miscellaneous materials filed at the end. Numbers in parentheses in each folder listing are those assigned to each volume in Ralph Newman, Great and Good Books: A Bibliographical Catalogue of the Limited Editions Club (Chicago, 1989).
