Introduction

The Dartmouth College Library received The Papers of Frank Carleton Doan in 1996, the gift of Doan's granddaughter, Ruth Doan MacDougall. It is a small collection, consisting mainly of sermons written by Doan, a Unitarian minister who summered in Orford, New Hampshire. The Library has also collected the papers of Doan's son, Daniel Doan, author of Fifty Hikes in the White Mountains, and the recently published Indian Stream Republic: Settling a New England Frontier 1785-1842.

Born February 13, 1877 in Nelsonville, Ohio, Frank C. Doan attended Hiram College for several years, and obtained his Ph. B. degree from Ohio State University in 1898. He earned his A.M. from Harvard in 1900; he married Isabel Wilson the same year, and began a four-year professorship in psychology and education at Ohio State University. Harvard granted him his Ph.D. in 1904, and he became Professor of the Philosophy of Religion and Systematic Theology at Meadeville Theological College in Meadeville, Pennsylvania.

Doan left Meadeville in 1913, accepting a pastorate in Summit, New Jersey. He was ordained as a Unitarian minister in 1914, and subsequently held pastorates in Iowa City, Iowa, and Rochester, New York. Doan retired from the ministry in 1925, due to ill health, and moved to Winchester, Massachusetts, where he died in 1927.

The Frank C. Doan collection occupies 7 boxes, or approximately 8 linear feet of shelf space. The material consists primarily of handwritten sermons, accompanied by abbreviated “pulpit notes.” Also included in the collection are articles, book manuscripts, pamphlets, brochures, clippings, correspondence and other materials. The correspondence and clippings from Doan's last year at Meadeville Theological College are of particular interest; he resigned because he believed that the president of the college was trying to restrict his academic freedom.

Frank C. Doan was a pacifist. The small section of materials on pacifism is quite remarkable for its World War Ipamphlets and brochures. Quite rare today, they run the gamut from the tribulations of conscientious objectors to the German atrocities in Belgium and France. Doan preached pacifism from his pulpit, alienating many parishioners. The Unitarian Church trustees of Summit, New Jersy finally issued a statement upholding Doan's right to freedom of speech in or out of the pulpit.

There are no restrictions placed on the use of any of the materials in the collection. However, photocopying will be done at the discretion of Special Collections staff. Further information concerning Frank Carleton Doan may be found in Special Collections in Webster Hall.

Addendum to the Papers of Frank Carleton Doan in the Dartmouth College Library

September 1997

Introduction

The Addendum to the Papers of Frank Carleton Doan (MS-819) was a gift to the Dartmouth College Library in August 1997, from the Reverend Doan's granddaughter, Cynthia H. Barton. Although only one box of materials, this gift fills in some of the gaps in the original 1996 collection. In particular, the clippings, correspondence, petition of support from Doan's parishioners, and the original holograph text of the Palm Sunday, 1917 sermon he preached against U.S. involvement in World War I, clear up the controversy only hinted at in the original collection.

Here, too, are some of the extremely introspective journals kept by the Reverend Doan, journals he relied on to keep him in touch with his life-goals. How well he succeeded may be judged by the several admiring tributes to his memory written by friends and peers after his death in 1927.

Further information concerning Frank Carleton Doan and the Doan family, may be found in Special Collections in Webster Hall.
