Introduction

The Dartmouth College Library has no accession record for the papers of Donald Harvard Morrison. A note in the guide to the Provost's papers suggests that the materials came to the library from the Administration Building at various times over several years. A letter dated April 20, 1959 (Box 5, Folder 39) from Richard Morin to Elizabeth Morrison states that Morin, then Special Assistant Pro Tem to President Dickey, had finished clearing out her late husband's office. He suggested that the personal papers come to the Archives. When the Provost's files were processed for use ca. 1975, the personal papers seem to have been separated from the professional files. They were roughly sorted and a guide, now superceded, was prepared.

Donald Harvard Morrison was born October 10, 1914, in Morgantown, West Virginia. He received his A.B. degree from West Virginia University in 1936, and his A.M. from Princeton in 1939. While still at Princeton, he married Elizabeth Ann Gibson. He went to Louisiana State University as an Instructor in Government in 1940; Princeton awarded him a Ph.D. in 1941. Promoted to Assistant Professor in 1942, Morrison was also the Director of the Bureau of Governmental Research, edited the Louisiana Municipal Review, and was awarded a Social Sciences Research Grant. He took a leave of absence that year and went to Washington, D.C. to serve as an Administrative Analyst and Budget Examiner in the Bureau of the Budget for the duration of the war.

Donald Morrison came to Dartmouth College in 1945 as an Assistant Professor of Government. Two years later he was promoted to Full Professor and named Dean of the Faculty. In 1955 he was named Dartmouth's first Provost, a position he held until his death. Along the way, Morrison co-authored several books (The United States at War, 1946, American Democracy in Theory and Practice, 1951, Memo To a College Trustee, 1959), as well as many articles and papers on education and public administration. Highly respected by his peers and beloved by his friends, Donald Morrison died unexpectedly in March 1959.

The Papers of Donald Harvard Morrison occupy five boxes, approximately 7.0 linear feet of shelf space. The materials consist of correspondence, clippings, pamphlets, scholarly papers, reports, proposals, notes, articles, book manuscripts, and many other items. Education and public administration form the major themes of the collection. Materials connected to the Bureau of the Budget, particularly the transcript of Harold D. Smith's Memoirs, are of special interest, as are other items listed under Research Materials and Book Manuscripts: The United States at War which pertain to the Federal government during the war years.

No restrictions have been placed on the use of any of the materials in the collection; however, due to the fragility of some documents, photocopying will be done at the discretion of Special Collections staff. Further information concerning Donald Morrison may be found in Special Collections in the Dartmouth College Library.
