Introduction

John Robert Williams was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1897. After service in World War I, he graduated from Dartmouth College in the Class of 1919. From 1919 to 1927, he was a graduate student at Harvard University where he received the degree of AM in 1922 and PhD in 1927. In 1926, he joined the faculty of Dartmouth College in the History Department as an instructor. Mr. Williams was promoted to Assistant Professor in 1928 and Professor of History in 1937, a post he held until his retirement in 1964. Professor Williams' was a noted historian of the intellectual history of medieval France, particularly the development of schools of philosophy at Laon, Reims, and Chartres. His publications reflect that interest.

The papers of John Robert Williams, a gift of his estate in 1998, consist of course notebooks from his student days at Harvard University; course syllabi, exams, and lecture notes from his teaching career at Dartmouth; materials relating to his class and class reunions at Dartmouth; and a large body of research notes, drafts, and essays on medieval French intellectual history. The collection is housed in 3 boxes and occupies 4.5 linear feet of shelf.
