Introduction

The Dartmouth College Library received the Papers of Charles T. Wood as a gift from Prof. Wood in 1997. A small collection of only 4 boxes, it is, nevertheless, an important group of papers. Charles T. Wood, Daniel Webster Professor of History and Comparative Literature Emeritus, is one of the foremost medieval historians in the United States, and has published extensively in his field. In addition, he has several times been Chair or Vice-Chair of Dartmouth's History Dept., and has served on a number of important College committees.

Born October 29, 1933 in St. Paul, Minnesota, Wood received his AB degree from Harvard University in 1955, and was married to Susan Danielson that summer. He went to work as an investment banker in St. Paul, but soon realized he preferred academia. He earned his AM degree from Harvard in 1957, and his Ph.D. in 1962. He became Assistant Professor of History at Dartmouth College in 1964, Associate Professor in 1967, and was promoted to full Professor of History in 1971. He was named Daniel Webster Professor of History in 1980, and Daniel Webster Professor of History and Comparative Literature in 1991. Wood served on such committees as the Trustees Advisory Committee on Investor Responsibility, the President's Ad Hoc Council on Diversity, both the Social Sciences and Humanities Divisional Councils, and the Committee Advisory to the President. He was Academic Director of the Alumni College and Alumni Seminars from 1972-1975.

Wood has held several important Fellowships, including that of the Guggenheim Foundation, and belongs to a number of scholarly organizations. He was president of the New England Medieval Conference in 1979, and is Treasurer of the Medieval Academy of America. Wood has published several books on medieval history; his The French Apanages and the Capetian Monarchy 1224-1328 is considered a classic by other historians.

The Wood papers are housed in 4 boxes, occupying 6.0 linear feet of shelf space. The materials are composed of articles, clippings, correspondence, proposals, scholarly papers, published and unpublished manuscripts, reports, student papers, minutes of meetings, programs of events, and much more. An unpublished manuscript of Professor James A. Epperson, Plaine Song After Muses Descanting, which Wood was asked to edit after Epperson's death, is included, as is a manuscript by William Huse Dunham, Jr., The Kingdom and the Crown of Britain 871-1971. Wood's own writings are well represented, mostly by articles and scholarly papers, and make lively and interesting reading.

No restrictions have been placed on any of the materials in the collection. Further information concerning Charles T. Wood may be found in Special Collections in the Dartmouth College Library.
