Introduction

The Dartmouth College Library purchased the Papers of Harriet Burleigh Janes in 1998 from the Boston Book Company, of Boston, MA. Harriet Burleigh Janes, whose professional nomde-plume was Effie Ray, was a Laconia, NH native who wrote short stories and articles for Boston newspapers, and whose promising career as a novelist was cut short by death in 1875.

Born May 27, 1845 in Laconia, Harriet Burleigh was writing and illustrating hand-sewn miniature books by the age of seven. At 18, her work was in print; A Letter From Effie Ray was published in the Trumpet and Freeman: A Universalist Magazine in 1863. She married Lt. Col. Albert Janes in 1867, and her daughter, Claire Lizelle, was born in 1869. Janes resumed her writing career, and in 1870 published a short story, Erminette, or The Coquette's Reward, in Harry Hazel's Yankee Blade of November 19. Other articles and stories appeared in The Yankee Blade and The American Union over the next five years. Janes was working on a novel, Leander, or The Haunted Manor, at the time of her death.

The Harriet Burleigh Janes collection occupies 2 boxes, or approximately 3.5 linear feet of shelf space. The materials consist of diaries, miniature books, drawings, a few photographs, some personal correspondence and genealogical information, and manuscripts of poems, short stories, and articles, as well as the unfinished book manuscript, and sections of newspapers containing “Effie Ray's” stories. Janes was not a consistent diarist, but her diaries and personal correspondence offer the best available glimpse of her life and personality. Perhaps the most curious part of the collection is the “spirit writings,” many purportedly by Harriet Janes, that her grieving family received after her early death.

No restrictions have been placed on the use of any of the materials in the collection. However, due to the age and fragility of some of the materials, photocopying will be done at the discretion of Special Collections staff. Further information concerning Harriet Burleigh Janes may be found in the Rauner Special Collections Library in Webster Hall.
