Introduction

The Junkins and Co. Papers were transferred to Rauner Special Collections Library from Feldberg Library and the Stefansson Collection in 1998. The materials are part of the professional engineering papers of Sydney E. Junkins, a member of the Class of 1887. Junkins, born in Union, New Hampshire in 1867, received his AB degree from the College in 1887, his AM in 1890, and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Engineering in 1927. He taught school for a few years after graduation, but was also active in engineering projects with J.F. Springfield, D'84, Th '86, and eventually joined the firm of Westinghouse, Church, Kerr and Co. in New York. In 1917, he branched out on his own and established the firm of Sydney E. Junkins Co., Ltd., in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

Occupying one box, or approximately 1. 5 linear feet of shelf space, The Junkins and Co. Papers consist exclusively of reports and a small amount of correspondence to do with certain engineering projects taken on by the company. One in particular stands out--the 1100 foot long deep-sea pier built in 1926 for the Vancouver, British Columbia harbor. Never before had anyone attempted to build a pier in such deep water. A comprehensive list of Junkins' other projects may be found in his alumni file (Junkins, Sydney E. 1887), or in the Class of 1887 50th Reunion Book (D. C. Hist. Class Reports 1887). There are no restrictions on the use of the materials in the collection. Further information concerning Sydney E. Junkins and Junkins and Co. may be found in the Rauner Special Collections Library in Webster Hall.
