Introduction

The Papers of Hannah Thompson Croasdale were transferred to Special Collections from the Biology Dept. by Michael Dietrich in the fall of 2001. Hannah Croasdale, who died in 1999, was the first tenured woman professor at Dartmouth College, and had been associated with the Biology Dept. for many years.

Hannah Thompson Croasdale was born November 18, 1905, in Daylesford, Pennsylvania. Her Quaker parents, John P. and Mary G. Croasdale, sent her to private school and encouraged her to seek high achievement. She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1928 with a degree in Biology, and in 1931, received her Master's degree in Botany. In 1935, still at UPenn, she earned her Ph.D. Her Ph.D. thesis, The Freshwater Algae of Woods Hole, Massachusetts, won the Sigma Xi Prize that year. Also in 1935, Hannah Croasdale joined the staff of the Dartmouth Medical School as a research assistant.

In 1937, Dr. Croasdale became a technical assistant in the Dept. of Zoology, a position she retained until 1953, when she was promoted to Research Associate with the rank of Instructor. Six years later she received another promotion in rank, to Assistant Professor, and in 1961, was given the rank of Associate Professor, but it was another two years before she was formally allowed to teach classes. After the Zoology and Botany departments merged in 1963 to become the Biology Dept., Dr. Croasdale was again promoted, to Associate Professor of Biology, with tenure. She became a full Professor of Biology in 1968, three years before she retired from the College.

Hannah Croasdale's lifetime of achievements were accomplished quietly and with complete dedication to her work. While still at college, she became associated with the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole, first as a botany collector, and then as an instructor in the summer algae courses. Having learned Latin on her own--she was denied access to instruction at school because of her gender-- she was soon recognized for her precise translations of biological taxa, and received requests for them from biologists all over the world. Her own writings were prolific; she published many articles and papers in professional journals, illustrated other biologists' books, and published a number of books of her own, singly, and in collaboration with other writers. Dr. Croasdale held several grants while rising through the ranks at Dartmouth, and was Vice President (1964) and President of the Phycological Society of America (1967). She travelled widely, collecting botanical specimens, and served as the first woman volunteer firefighter in Hanover's Fire Dept., as well as being Secretary-Treasurer of the Dartmouth Scientific Association.

With the dawning of a new era at the College, Hannah Croasdale's record of accomplishments was finally recognized. In 1983, the Hannah T. Croasdale Award was established, to be awarded each year to the person who had made the most significant contribution to quality of life for women at the College. The Phycological Society of America, of which Hannah Croasdale was a founder and the 21st President, followed suit in 1987 with the establishment of the Hannah T. Croasdale Fellowship. Dr. Croasdale died July 27, 1999.

The Papers of Hannah T. Croasdale occupy 4 boxes, or approximately 4.5 linear feet of shelf space. The materials consist of articles, clippings, some correspondence, financial records, photographs, illustrations, pamphlets, programs, maps, research materials, field guides, and biological specimens. Two clamshell boxes contain mounted algae (seaweed) specimens collected by Hannah Croasdale in the waters around the Isles of Shoals and atWoods Hole in Massachusetts, dried and mounted. Each specimen is carefully labelled with its Latin name, where it was collected, by whom, and the year. Although fragile, the specimens are a valuable record of the algal life present in those areas 80 years ago.

The collection also contains some rather rare, or out-of-print pamphlets and articles. An example would be Einar Teiling's The Desmid Genus Staurodesmus, illustrated by Hannah Croasdale, and not to be found in Dartmouth's Library Catalog. Some of Hannah Croasdale's own publications are now somewhat hard to find, and there is a good selection of them included in this small collection.

No restrictions have been placed on any of the materials in this collection. Fragile items, however, must be handled in the presence of a staff member. Further information concerning Hannah Thompson Croasdale may be found in Rauner Special Collections Library in Webster Hall.
