Abstract: |
Benjamin F. Prescott (1833-1894). Dartmouth College Trustee and Governor of New Hampshire. Contains correspondence, certificates,
clippings, checks, receipts, invoices, photographs, postcards, and telegrams. Materials concern Prescotts tenure as Governor
and Trustee of Datmouth.

Benjamin Franklin Prescott (Feb. 26, 1833 - Feb. 21, 1894) was a New Hampshire lawyer, newspaper editor, and politician. He
was educated at Pembroke Academy (1848-49), Phillips Exeter Academy (1850-52) and Dartmouth College(1853-56). He was admitted
to the New Hampshire Bar in 1959, and during he Civil War served as the associate editor of the Indpendent Democrat. He became
secretary for the Republican State Committee (1859-74), secretary for the New Hampshire college of Electors in six national
elections (1860-80), special New England agent of the U.S. Treasury Department (1865-69), New Hampshire Secretary of State
(1872-73, 1875-76, and Governor of New Hampshire (1877-78). He was elected Vice President of the New Hampshire Historical
Society, made a fellow of the Royal Historic Society of London, and served as a trustee of Dartmouth College (1878). In retirement
he was elected delegate-at-large to the Republican National Convention of 1880, and he was chairman of the
New Hampshire delegation which nominated James. A Garfield for president. Prescott was also appointed to the State Board of
Railroad commissioners (1887-93). Prescott was the author of two books: Portraits of Governors, Judges, senators and Other
Public Men of New Hampshire (1874); and Stars and Stripes: the Flag of the United States of America: When, Where and By Whom
Was It First Saluted? (1878).
The Papers of Benjamin F. Prescott contains personal and business correspondence dating from the period when Prescott served
as New Hampshire's Secretary of State, Governor of New Hampshire, and trustee of Dartmouth college. Also included are twelve
certificates, newspaper clippings, checks, legal documents, receipts, invoices, photographs, postcards, and letters and telegrams
of condolence, addressed to Mary L. Prescott on the death of her husband.
