Abstract:

The Letters of Ruby Mildred Ayres contain eight letters written by Ayres, documenting a few of her professional and personal interactions within a brief period of her career as a prolific popular novelist in England. Three are addressed to Mr. Douglas Sladen, English poet, while the remaining five are addressed to Mr. Leonard Moore, literary agent. Printed on Corner Ways Sheepcote Road Harrow letterhead.

Introduction to the Collection

The Letters of Ruby Mildred Ayres contains eight letters written by Ayres. Three of the letters are addressed to Mr. Douglas Sladen, English poet, and pertain to invitations, thanks, and other small personal matters. The remaining five letters are addressed to Mr. Leonard Moore, literary agent, and pertain to business matters involving serial installments being published. The letters document a few of the professional and personal interactions of Ayres' within a brief period of her career as a prolific, popular novelist in England.

Biography

Ruby Mildred Ayres was born 28 January 1883, in London, England, the daughter of an architect. She married Reginald William Pocock, an insurance broker, in 1909 (Pocock died in a train accident in the 1940's). Ayres was an English popular novelist (known primarily for her romantic novels), and also wrote serials for the "Daily Chronicle" and "Daily Mirror". Her first novel "Richard Chatterton V.C." was published in 1916. She had also written for motion pictures in the United States and England, and her play "Silver Wedding," was produced in 1932. Ayres died 14 November 1955 in Weybridge, England, at the age of 72 years.
