Primarily consist of correspondence (typescript and manuscript) with notable political figures, publishers, former students, academics, and personal acquaintances. Correspondents include Richard Nixon, Jack Kemp, Norman Podhertz, Pat Buchanan, William Randolph Herst Jr, Richard Viguerie, John Sununu, Jacqnes Barzan, Lew Lehrman, Nackey Loeb, George Will, George Bush, Michael Deaver, Ed Koch, Joyce Carol Oates, Harold Bloom, William F. Buckley, Jr.



Biography

Jeffrey Peter Hart was born on April 22, 1930 in Brooklyn, New York and was raised in New York City. He entered Dartmouth as a member of the class of 1951 and left during his junior year. He received his bachelor's degree from Columbia University in 1952 followed by his PhD and served in the U.S. Naval Intelligence during the Korean War. Hart returned to Dartmouth and taught English from 1963 to 1993. While there, he served as faculty advisor for The Dartmouth Review and continues to advise the paper. He was a right-leaning syndicated columnist as well as a speech writer for Presidents Nixon and Reagan. He became senior editor of The National Review in 1969. Hart is author of nine books including The Making of the Amerian Conservative Mind: National Review and Its Times, Acts of Recovery: Essays on Culture and Politics, and Smiling Through the Cultural Catastrophe: Toward the Revival of Higher Education.

Scope and Contents of Collection

The Jeffrey Hart papers primarily consist of correspondence (typescript and manuscript) with notable political figures, publishers, former students, academics, and personal acquaintances. Several published articles and poems by Hart are also included.

The correspondence documents publisher responses to Hart's submissions, reader response to essays published in the National Review, praise and opinions of Hart's literary work, and writers' thanks to Hart for his praise of their published works.

Correspondents include Richard Nixon, Jack Kemp, Norman Podhertz, Pat Buchanan, William Randolph Herst Jr, Richard Viguerie, John Sununu, Jacqnes Barzan, Lew Lehrman, Nackey Loeb, George Will, George Bush, Michael Deaver, Ed Koch, Joyce Carol Oates and Harold Bloom. Of particular note is the extensive correspondence with William F. Buckley, Jr., principally about matters relating to National Review.
