Introduction to the Collection

The Jeffrey Hart papers primarily consist of correspondence (typescript and manuscript) with notable political figures, publishers, former students, academics, and personal acquaintances. Several published articles and poems by Hart are also included.

The correspondence documents published responses to Hart's submissions, reader response to essays published in the 'National Review,' praise and opinions of Hart's literary work, and writers' thanks to Hart for his praise of their published works.

Correspondents include Richard Nixon, Jack Kemp, Norman Podhertz, Pat Buchanan, William Randolph Hearst, Jr., Richard Viguerie, John Sununu, Jacques Barzun, Lew Lehrman, Nackey Loeb, George Will, George Bush, Sr., Michael Deaver, Ed Koch, Joyce Carol Oates and Harold Bloom. Of note is extensive correspondence with William F. Buckley, Jr., principally about matters relating to the 'National Review.'
