Biography

Ira Colby, Jr. was born in Claremont, New Hampshire on January 11, 1831 as a son of a farmer. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1857, studied law at a New Hampshire law firm, and was admitted to the bar in 1860. During the years of the Civil War, Colby was an active supporter of the Union cause. He served as a representative for many years in the New Hampshire legislature with the Republican Party. He became County Solicitor in 1864.
