Introduction to the Collection

The Ira Colby, Jr. papers contains typed and handwritten correspondence related to the law firm of Ira Colby and Son, Claremont, NH.

Contains correspondence between Hon. Ira Colby, his son Ira G. Colby ("Don", Dartmouth 1894) and various clients, law firms, courts, and businesses. The Colby firm handled settlements regarding wills, lands, and bill collection. Also contains correspondence with family and friends concerning Dartmouth College and teaching posts Colby, Jr. held in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

Other materials of interest include diaries for 1850, 1882, 1885-86, alumni correspondence with Dartmouth College, correspondence of Louise M. Colby with her sister Lucy A. Holt.

Biography

Ira Colby, Jr. was born in Claremont, New Hampshire on January 11, 1831 as a son of a farmer. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1857, studied law at a New Hampshire law firm, and was admitted to the bar in 1860. During the years of the Civil War, Colby was an active supporter of the Union cause. He served as a representative for many years in the New Hampshire legislature with the Republican Party. He became County Solicitor in 1864.
