Abstract:

Leslie W. Snow (DC class of 1912) was the younger of two sons of Leslie P. Snow (DC class of 1886), a lawyer and justice of the Supreme Court of New Hampshire, and member of an old and prominent New England family. Leslie W. Snow was an employee of Chase Securities Corporation, Chase Harris Forbes Corporation, and the Chase National Bank, eventually serving as vice president of Chase National Bank from 1933 to 1945; he was also the president and director of the Founders Corporation of Theta Delta Chi. The Leslie W. Snow Family Papers are a collection of documents and artifacts relating to the life of Leslie W. Snow and his relatives and ancestors, especially his father, Leslie Perkins Snow, step-mother, Norma Currier Snow, and older brother, Conrad Edwin Snow (DC class of 1912), but also including documents regarding ancestors and relatives of his wife, Emily Royer. These documents include images, including a significant number of photographs taken by Snow during his service in Europe during World War I, as well as manuscript and printed materials. Among the documents is a collection of personal and business correspondence of Leslie W. Snow and his immediate family, as well as official documents (birth certificates, diplomas, military certificates), diaries, passports, medals and insignia, and other biographical information. More unwieldy items are Leslie P. Snow's surveyor's compass, a model steam engine build by Leslie W. Snow around 1905, and two King James Bibles documenting the history of the Snow family from 1772 through 1959. Other lives documented by the collection include Leslie W. Snow's maternal grandparents, Franklin P. and Missouri Eliza Whitmore Currier, and his paternal grandparents, Edwin and Helena Maria Perkins Snow, and his great-grandfather, Joseph Snow, as well as numerous other relatives covered in less depth. Of his wife's family, there are a few materials relating to Emily Royer's parents, Harry Franklin and Carrie Hoffer Royer, her maternal grandparents, Jacob Zollinger and Sarah Jane Grove Hoffer, and her paternal grandfather, Dr. Benjamin Franklin Royer, as well as other relatives represented by fewer materials.

Introduction to the Collection

The Leslie W. Snow Family Papers contain dageurrotypes, tintypes, photographs, personal and business correspondence, official documents (birth certificates, diplomas, military certificates, passports, immunization records), diaries, medals and insignia, Dartmouth class books, newsletters, published articles, a surveyor's compass, a steam engine, bills, receipts, petitions, account books, certificates, and two King James Bibles with family biographical information. Earlier generations of the Snow family are documented in "A History of Carroll County, NH," as well as in a manuscript by Conrad E. Snow called "The Snow Story."

These materials document the life of Leslie W. Snow and his relatives and ancestors, especially his father, Leslie Perkins Snow, step-mother, Norma Currier Snow, older brother, Conrad Edwin Snow, and wife, Emily Royer Snow, and includes documents regarding ancestors Joseph and Edwin Snow, as well as members of the Whitmore, Currier, Hoffer, Grove, and Royer families.

Of particular interest is the collection of correspondence and photographs from Leslie W. Snow's involvement in the First World War, including a year-long tour in France and Austria.

Correspondents include Leslie P. Snow, Norma Currier Snow, Conrad E. Snow, Joseph Snow, Jr., and Edwin Snow.

Biography

Leslie Whitmore Snow was born in Snowville, NH, on December 9, 1890, to parents Leslie Perkins and Susan Eliza (Currier) Snow. His mother died in his youth, and his father married her sister, Norma Cutter (Currier) Snow. Leslie Whitmore Snow graduated cum laude from Dartmouth College in 1912, in the same year as his brother, Conrad Snow. He later went on to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, graduating with a B.S. in 1914. Snow served a year overseas in the ordnance department of the US Army during the first World War. In 1921, he married Emily Royer, and they later had three daughters-Shirley, Janet (name later changed to Leslie), and Elizabeth. Professionally, he was an employee of Chase Securities Corporation, Chase Harris Forbes Corporation, and the Chase National Bank, eventually serving as vice president of Chase National Bank from 1933 to 1945. Leslie Whitmore Snow was the president and director of the Founders Corporation of Theta Delta Chi. He died on August 15, 1958, and is buried in Rochester, NH. Also included in this collection are materials relating to ancestors of the Snow and Royer families: featured prominently are Leslie W. Snow's maternal grandparents, Franklin P. and Missouri Eliza Whitmore Currier, and his paternal grandparents, Edwin and Helena Maria Perkins Snow. Also included are materials regarding Edwin Snow's father, Joseph Snow, and various other relatives not covered in as much depth. On the Royer side, there are a few materials relating to Emily Royer's parents, Harry Franklin and Carrie Hoffer Royer, her maternal grandparents, Jacob Zollinger and Sarah Jane Grove Hoffer, and her paternal grandfather, Dr. Benjamin Franklin Royer, as well as other relatives represented by fewer materials.
