Introduction to the Collection

The records of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered Coalition (GLBTC) contain correspondence, newspaper clippings, magazine articles, academic articles and questionnaire surveys documenting the inception, interactions and activities of the organization at Dartmouth College.

Introduction

The Coalition for Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual and Transgendered Concerns (GLBTC) is an alliance of Dartmouth employees working to make Dartmouth College a safe and welcoming place for bisexual, lesbian, gay and transgendered individuals. It was founded in October 1992 by Susan Ackerman, John Crane, Annelise Orleck, Alexis Jetter, Tom Luxon and Ivy Schweitzer. Their mission was to "make the coalition visible, by educating our friends and colleagues, by networking with other groups, and by responding to inequity and homophobia, [and] work to eliminate from the Dartmouth Community all prejudice and discrimination based on sexual orientation.” In March 1994, the coalition created Queer Life at Dartmouth (QLD) as an e-mail discussion channel separate from the Coalition. Because of their effort on behalf of this community Dartmouth College established a new position, Coordinator of Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Programming in September 1995. Bart Bingenheimer, Dartmouth Class of 1994, was the first incumbent.
