INTRODUCTION

Brower was a whaler, trader, and postmaster in Barrow, Alaska, and for many years held the title of “northernmost white man” in Alaska. Beginning with his first voyage in 1884, Brower became an important citizen of the north, studying the ways of the natives and their natural environment.

This collection includes a photocopy of his diary, and unpublished manuscripts of My Arctic Outpost, and The Northern-most American, both in typescript. Also included are galley proofs of Fifty Years Below Freezing, published 1942, and several published articles.

Brower's papers are a part of the Vilhjalmur Stefansson Collection on the Polar Regions and occupy 1 linear foot in 3 Hollinger boxes.
