THE PAPERS OF ARTHUR MALCOLM DODGE

In the summer of 1896, when Robert E. Peary returned to Greenland on the Hope, Captain John Bartlett commanding, to try to secure the largest of the three meteorites that he had discovered there, his personal party was accompanied by two parties organized for scientific research. One, under Professor R. S. Tarr, was landed at Wilcox Head; the other, led by Professor Alfred E. Burton of M.I.T., was landed at Umanak, not far north of Disko Island. Burton's party included George H. Barton, Russell W. Porter, John C. Phillips, George R. Putnam, and Arthur Malcolm Dodge (M.D., Harvard, 1899; died 1920). Dodge took pictures during the trip north, the stay near Umanak, and the return of all the parties on the Hope in September, 1896. This collection consists of 104 of Dodge's photographs, including 8 of what appear New England scenes, and a copy of an article that he wrote about the expedition. Other brief accounts of the 1896 trip can be found in Peary's Northward over the Great Ice (1898) and in George R. Putnam's “A Summer Voyage to the Arctic,” National Geographic Magazine (April, 1897).
