Adjunct Descriptive Data

The Canadian Ice Distribution Survey is a survey of literature, the purpose of which is to extend knowledge of formation, extent, and movement of different types of floating ice and accompanying navigational difficulties. The survey was compiled by the Department of Mines and Technical Surveys, Ottawa, in 1951. Materials surveyed include, among others, aerial ice sightings, radio reports, books and reports by government agencies.

The information, on 5×8 cards, is arranged numerically by geographic region. Each card gives the geographic location, bibliographic reference, and a quotation concerning the sighting of ice. Important information includes date of sighting, type of ice, and any shift or change in the ice.

The Canadian Ice Distribution Survey is a part of the Vilhjalmur Stefansson Collection on the Polar Regions at Dartmouth College. It contains approximately 7,000 cards and occupies 3 linear feet.
