Lantern Slides

Introduction

Vilhjalmur Stefansson was an Arctic explorer, promoter and teacher. His expeditions above the Arctic Circle and experience with the native peoples convinced him that the region was hospitable to human and animal habitation, and when accepted on its own terms, a `friendly' environment. To that end, he spent his life educating the world about the Arctic and its resources.

Stefansson was part of three expeditions between 1906 and 1918. Documentation from these explorations including diaries, notes, scientific experiments, letters, et cetera, are found in the Stefansson Collection, Dartmouth College Library (Stef MSS 98). Complementing these papers is an extensive archive of correspondence, a pamphlet file, and a photograph collection including photographic prints, photo albums, color transparencies, glass plate negatives, and lantern slides.

Stefansson lectured internationally on the subject of Arctic exploration and culture. His guiding thesis was the cultivation of untapped natural resources above the Arctic circle and its `friendly' environment. He drew from a collection of over 700 lantern slides to illustrate his lectures. The images tended emphasized his theories. For instance, portraits of so-called “Copper Eskimos” were hand-tinted to accentuate light brown hair and bright blue eyes. The visual aid helped reinforce Stefansson's hypothesis that early European explorers made contact and indeed, may have co-mingled with the indigenous Arctic population.

The lantern slides were created from the extensive collection of printed photographs associated with his three Arctic expeditions as well as published sources such as The home of the blizzard: being the story of the Australasian Antarctic expedition, 1911-1914 and The Eagle's gift: Alaska Eskimo tales. Principle photographers of the original prints were George Hubert Wilkins, James Francis Hurley, P. E. Corell, the Lomen Brothers, and the Geological Survey of Canada. Most slides are from the Canadian Arctic Expedition, the U. S. Anthropological Expedition, the Wrangel Island Expedition, the Wrangel Relief Expedition, and the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (the last three of which Stefansson was not a member).

Included are images of flora and fauna, earthen and snow covered landscapes, ice formations, ships and boats, indigenous housing, clothing, hunting and fishing practices, as well as many individual and group shots of scientists, explorers, “Copper Eskimos”, and Inuit peoples. Views of native cultures are contrasted with those of early to mid-20th century industry including hydraulic mining, logging, reindeer herding, agriculture, and ranching. Additionally, there is aerial photography of forts, settlements and landscapes; images of mission settlements in Alaska, and the North West Territories; “Masonland” (the Alaskan out-post home of Beatrice and Willoughby Mason); and archaeology digs at Osterbygd, Greenland.

Somewhat apart from the Arctic images are lantern slides of Stefansson's 1923 trip to Australia. Included are images of major ports and urban centers as well as photographs of Australian aborigines, ranching and irrigation systems, flora and fauna (he was particularly taken with Australian camels), and driving across the dessert. There are a few images of his brief stop in French Polynesia. Finally, there is a series of Stefansson teaching in Dartmouth College's Northern Studies Program; specifically, how to construct a snowhouse.

The bulk of this guide is the printed version of a Filemaker Database created to facilitate access to the lantern slides. It is part of a larger database that includes all photographic media in the Stefansson Arctic Photograph collection. The database may be used for locating themes (i.e.. dwellings), groups (i.e., “Copper Inuit”), individuals (i.e.. Stefansson), locations (i.e.. Point Barrow, Alaska), ships (i.e.. Mary Sachs), et cetera from the collection. The attached Authority File, created in-house by Special Collection staff members, allows for key-word searching in a “Description” field. The Authority File (pages 6-10 of this guide) should be consulted when formulating research questions as it will help standardize terminology and spellings. For instance, the term `snowhouse' is used instead of the more common word, `igloo.' In many cases, copy negatives are available for study and re-print purposes. Contact Special Collections for more information about this resource and its searching capabilities.

The collection of lantern slides was given to Dartmouth College by Vilhjalmur Stefansson.

Introduction

Stef MSS 229

Guide to the Stefansson Collection of Arctic Photographs: Photographic Prints Copy Prints Copy Negatives in the Dartmouth College Library

September, 1997

Supported by a grant from the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation

Vilhjalmur Stefansson was an Arctic explorer, promoter and teacher. His expeditions above the Arctic Circle and personal experience with the native peoples convinced him that the region was hospitable to human and animal habitation, and when accepted on its own terms, a `friendly' environment.

Complementing these papers is an extensive archive of correspondence, pamphlet and ephemera files, and a photograph collection including photographic prints, albums, color transparencies, glass plate negatives, and lantern slides.

The Stefansson collection of photographs consists of over 1100 black and white images primarily from the Canadian Arctic Expedition (1913-1918). Most are printed on standard 3 1/4 by 5 1/2″ or 3 1/2 × 4 1/2″ paper. Some are mounted on card stock. Images dating between 1913 and 1916 were taken by C.A.E. photographer Sir George Hubert Wilkins. Many of the prints are inscribed with his unique numbering system (1-503) thereby allowing researchers to pinpoint the exact time and date of a particular image as well as the chronology of the series from the 1913 expedition launching in Nome, Alaska until his exodus from the expedition in 1916. Stefansson's and other C.A.E. members' inscriptions identify and elaborate the images from 1916 through to Stefansson's convalescence at Fort Yukon in 1918. Many photographs are also inscribed and stamped by the Geological Survey of Canada (a sponsor of the expedition). Some were sold to the Lomen Brothers who in turn, reproduced the images for a popular market.

Researchers will note a five-number identification system inscribed on many photographs. These numbers identify images with the Department of Mines Geological Survey Photographic Division (Canada). Users will also note that while the photographs are arranged sequentially, there are gaps in the five-digit numeration. This is explained by the fact that Stefansson himself did not own a complete set of expedition photographs. Further explanation of numeration and call numbers will be found within the body of the collection.

The photographs are organized chronologically. Included are images of flora and fauna, earthen and snow-covered landscapes, ice formations and leads, boats (including ships, kayaks, and umiaks), temporary camps, work stations, scientific experiments, and indigenous housing, clothing, hunting and fishing practices. There are many individual and group photographs of scientists, Copper and MacKenzie Eskimos, natives of Flaxman Island, and other Inuit people (including many children) from throughout the region. Clothing and body markings are especially featured. Within the collection are three sequential sets: the first, construction of a snowhouse (igloo); converting a sledge to a sledge-boat; and the rescue of survivors from the ship The Karluk. Also included are images of mission settlements in Alaska and the North West Territories, Hudson's Bay Company outposts, and Eldorado Mining Company enterprises. Photographs and negatives from the 1921-23 Wrangel Island and Wrangel Island Relief Expeditions are found at the end of the collection.

A good proportion of the images will be familiar to Arctic enthusiasts. Stefansson culled photographs from this collection for his many publications including The Friendly Arctic (1921), The Northward Course of Empire (1922), The Adventure of Wrangel Island (1925), and the abridged edition of My Life with the Eskimos (1927). He reproduced over 700 of the photographs in the form of lantern slides to illustrate his lectures. These visual aids were hand-colored adding drama and weight to Stefansson's theory of a Nordic colony above the Arctic Circle (Stef Mss 226). Possibly believing the images would be better preserved, Stefansson also had over 300 images copied in the form of glass plate negatives (Stef Mss 225).

This collection is comprised of four elements: 35 mm copy negatives, contact prints of copy negatives, copy prints and original prints. Because of the fragile condition of the original prints, researchers are encouraged to use the complete set of high quality black and white copy prints (see Boxes 3 and 4). Printed on archival paper, the study prints are more stable and will withstand the rigors of handling better than the brittle (and often shattered) original photographs. Where multiple exposures of the same print were available, the photographer chose the print with the clearest resolution for reproduction. The copy prints are the same size as and include the entire field of the original photograph. All original inscriptions are transcribed into a computer data base which also includes archival and current cataloging information, and call numbers. A complete set of 35 mm copy negatives are available (see Boxes 1-3) for reproduction and reprint purposes. It should rarely be necessary to look at the original prints. Dartmouth College Special Collections staff appreciates patrons cooperation in caring for this important archive.

A Filemaker Pro data base has been created to facilitate access to the images. It includes all photographic media in the Stefansson Arctic Photograph collection (described above). The data base may be used for identifying themes (i.e. dwellings), groups (i.e. “Copper Inuit”), individuals (i.e. Vilhjalmur Stefansson), locations (i.e. Point Barrow, Alaska), ships (i.e. The Mary Sachs), et cetera. The attached Authority File, created in-house by Special Collection staff members, allows for key-word searching in a “Description” field. The Authority File (pages 8-13 of this guide) should be consulted when formulating research questions as it will help standardize terminology and spellings. For instance, the term `snowhouse' is used instead of the more common word, `igloo.' Where duplication occurs between the three media, a cross-reference note is included in the record (“See also...”). Bibliographic reference for photographs is also noted (“See also The Friendly Arctic, facing page 10.”) Contact Special Collections for more information about this resource and its searching capabilities.

The collection of photographs was given to Dartmouth College by Vilhjalmur Stefansson.
