The materials represented in this guide may be accessed through the Rauner Special Collections Library at Dartmouth College. Rauner Library is located in Webster Hall. The materials must be used on-site and may not leave Rauner Library.

Introduction to the Collection

The collection contains materials relating to the two expeditions (Baldwin Polar Expedition, 1901-1902; Baldwin-Ziegler Polar Expedition, 1903-1905) of Charles L. Seitz to the North Pole during the time frame of 1901 to 1905. Contained within are three diaries kept by Seitz, as well as photographs and a complete transcript of the diaries arranged chronologically.

Biography

Charles Lewis Seitz of Evansville, Indiana, graduated from the Medical School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1899. Seitz served as an Assistant Surgeon on two polar expeditions to the North Pole (neither of which was successful).
