Introduction to the Collection

Manuscript narrative of a lecture given at the Roxbury Mechanic's Institute in Massachusetts, titled "Erskine's Panorama Lecture: Around the World in Search of the Antarctic Continent Under Capt. Wilkes." Erskine was a seaman with the United States Exploring Expedition, 1838-1842. The progression of the lecture unfolds geographically and narrated an 11,000 sq. ft. mural depicting various scenes encountered by the Expedition. Among the geographic subjects discussed are: Estroza Pass, Isle of Madeira, Rio de Janeiro, Andes, St. Lorenzo Island, Tongataboo, Antarctic Continent, Henry's Island - Fiji, and Cooks Bay - Sandwich Islands. Following the lecture are transcribed press accounts from Boston newspapers concerning the Roxbury lecture.
