Introduction to the Collection

The papers of Gail Osherenko contain articles, typescripts, reprints, notes, conference and workshop material and some correspondence related to her research on the Arctic region, its resources and environmental challenges. Some of the subjects included in the papers are the Pearson-Dickey Treaties, Indigenous People, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Alaska, Russia and Area X proposals, the Arctic Working Group on International Relations, the International Arctic Science Committee and environmental impact of Chernobyl. The material is in Russian and English.


Gail Osherenko was born in 1947. She graduated with a BA in English from Principia College in 1969, and a J.D. from the University of California, Davis, School of Law in 1975. After graduation she worked for California State Senator, Anthony Beilenson, on environmental legislation to create the California Coastal Act and the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. From 1977 to 1982, Osherenko worked for Beilenson, the US Department of Justice, the Council on Environmental Quality, the Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund and the Vermont Natural Resources Council. In 1989, she taught at the Center for Northern Studies in Wolcott, Vermont. She also became a Senior Fellow in the Institute of Arctic Studies within the Dickey Center for International Studies at Dartmouth College. She remained at Dartmouth until 2002. Since 2003, Osherenko has been a Research Scientist for law and policy and a Lecturer in Environmental Studies at the Marine Science Institute of the University of California. In 2006, she became a Project Scientist for the Institute.

In addition to her teaching and research, Osherenko served on the Vermont Water Resource Board and was a principal investigator in the NCEAS working group on Ocean Ecosystem-Based Management. Osherenko co-authored "The Age of the Arctic: Hot Conflicts and Cold Realities" and "Polar Politics: Creating International Environmental Regime." She also co-authored "Siberian Survival: The Nenets and their Story". Osherenko has also directed documentary films, including "Arctic Expedition" (2006), "The Dark Side of the Loon" (2008), and "Loon Chick's First Summer" in 2012.
