Starting in the summer of 1978, Dartmouth Humanities Institute was aimed at promoting ways in which interdisciplinary humanistic study could improve secondary and elementary school instruction in New Hampshire and Vermont. Within the context of Dartmouth College's commitment to the Humanities and the success of the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies Program in serving secondary and elementary school teachers, Dartmouth conducted a ten-weeks institute providing extensive exposure to the humanities to enrolled teachers. Applicants were nominated by New Hampshire and Vermont schools and selected by a faculty committee of the MALS program.The Institute lasted for 5 years, with primary funding coming from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
