Introduction to the Collection

Town of Hanover Water Works (1893-). Contains Board of Directors meeting minutes from 1924-1979, 1982-2001; property deeds, real estate documents, financial documents, plans, maps, field notebooks, photographs, and correspondence. Documents the administrative and fiscal proceedings of the organization as well as the physical construction of two reservoirs on Balch Hill.

Introduction

The Hanover Water Works company began because two disastrous fires in the 1880s raised awareness for the need of fire protection for the College and town. The company was organized on August 1, 1893 and it issued stock which was held jointly by the College and the town. Work was completed on the first system (consisting of a reservoir, dam, gate house, spillway, and pipelines) by November 1, 1893. The company had purchased over 1200 acres of the watershed by 1912 and added an additional reservoir by 1924 and a third in 1962.
