Marilyn Austin was born on November 10, 1935 in Richmond, Indiana. She received her B.S. degree from Indiana University in 1957 and her MA and PhD in English from Rutgers in 1960 and 1963, respectively. She joined the faculty of Dartmouth College in 1967 as an adjunct assistant professor of English and began her administrative career in 1971 when she became an assistant provost, one of the first women in the college to hold a high-level administrative position. She continued teaching and held numerous administrative positions at the college for the next twenty years during the time of the college's the transition to coeducation. She left Dartmouth in 1988 to go to the Dana Foundation in New York.
