Charles Joseph Zimmerman was born February 9, 1902, in New York City. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1923, and from the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration in 1924. Except for service in the U.S. Navy during World War II, his entire professional career was spent in the insurance business. His involvement with professional organizations, and his service on community and educational boards, was extensive. He received many awards for his professional and civic work, and for his philanthropic activity.

From 1952 to 1972, Zimmerman was a member of the Dartmouth College Board of Trustees, serving as chairman of the board, 1970-1972. He also chaired the Bicentennial Executive Committee, 1967-70; was national chairman of the Capital Gifts Campaign, 1956-1959; Chairman of the Alumni fund, 1950-1951; President of the Class of 1923, 1954-1959; and a member of the Board of Overseers of the Tuck School, 1951-1957. Zimmerman Lounge in Blunt Alumni Center, Zimmerman Hall in the East Wheelock residence cluster and Zimmerman Fitness Center in Alumni Gym are named in his honor.

Charles Zimmerman died February 24, 1994, in Hartford, Connecticut.
