Walter Burke was born on July 30, 1922 and was raised in Larchmont, New York and matriculated at Dartmouth in the fall of 1940. His Dartmouth education was interrupted by World War II when he joined the Navy in the fall of 1942. Following his discharge four years later, Burke entered Columbia Law School and received his J.D. degree in 1948. After practicing law for four years, he spent the remainder of his career as the investment adviser to the Sherman Fairchild family and later as president and director of the Sherman Fairchild Foundation. Burke served as a trustee of the College from 1976-1986 and was chairman of the board from 1983-1986.
