Franklin Smallwood was born on June 24, 1927 in Ridgewood, New Jersey. He graduated from Dartmouth as a member of the Class of 1951 and earned his master's degree and PhD from Harvard. He returned to Dartmouth in 1957 as assistant to President John Sloan Dickey, a position he held until 1959 when he became a member of the faculty of the government department. In addition to his faculty appointment, Professor Smallwood held a number of administrative positions including vice president and dean for student affairs and director of the Rockefeller Center for Public Policy and the Social Sciences. He retired from Dartmouth in 1988.
