Born on August 13, 1933 in Lowestoft, England, Peter Smith received the B.A. degree in English from the University of Birmingham (England) in 1954 and the M.Litt. degree from the University of Durham (England) in 1967. After administrative positions at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and the University of California at Santa Cruz, he was appointed director of the Hopkins Center for the Arts in 1969, a position he held until 1981. Following a sabbatical to study British theater after WWII, Smith returned to Dartmouth to work on special projects in alumni affairs and development followed by several years serving as historian of the Dickey presidency. In 1987 Smith was appointed dean of the School of the Arts at Columbia University.
