Introduction to the Collection

The oral history interview of Lloyd Brace is comprised of four audiocassette recordings, a transcript and a tape log of the recording. The interview was conducted by Jere Daniell on March 2, 1977. The entire interview runs for approximately three and a half hours and covers his undergraduate years, his work fundraising as an alumnus, his trusteeship of the College and his assessment of Presidents Dickey and Kemeny and the move to coeducation.

Lloyd DeWitt Brace was born on February 26, 1903 in Lincoln, Nebraska. He spent his career in banking at the First National Bank of Boston, starting as a clerk in 1925 and working his way up through the ranks, retiring in 1968 as chairman of the board and chief executive officer. Mr. Brace was elected a trustee of the College in 1951 and served on the board for 22 years. He was the first trustee to be elected chairman of the board (a position held by the president until that time) and served in that position from 1967 until 1970. As an undergraduate, Mr. Brace was president of the Dartmouth Outing Club, manager of the ski team, a member of Palaeopitus, Theta Chi, Sphinx, the Canoe Club, and Bait and Bullet. His alumni activities included membership on the Alumni Council and he was also president of the Dartmouth College Athletic Council. Mr. Brace received the Alumni Award in 1975. He died on April 20, 1986.
