Ernest Martin Hopkins, Dartmouth Class of 1901, was born in Dunbarton, NH, November 6, 1877. He became the College's 11th president in 1916, and was to serve until 1945. The administration spanned two world wars and the Great Depression. Unusual for Dartmouth presidents up to that time, Hopkins came to the presidency from the business world, and his administration was to witness a period of growth at the College, both in enrollment, curriculum, and expansion of the physical plant. Hopkins died in Manset, Maine, August 13, 1964.
